Cat litter types:
- Silica litter: made from a form of silica gel that absorbs odours.
Advantage: less dust than clay litter
Disadvantage: toxic when eaten
- Non-clumping litter: usually made with natural materials like clay or wood
Advantage: can absorb more urine and reduces odours; less expensive
Disadvantage: your cat's litter has to be changed more often
- Clumping litter: uses bentonite or natural fibers as clumping material
Advantage: stays clean longer
Disadvantage: produces some dust
- Clay litter: natural litter type
Advantage: absorbs liquid easily
Disadvantage: should be replaced at least once a week
- Biodegradable litter: made from natural fibers, wood or recycled materials
Advantage: environmentally friendly & non-toxic; also includes flushable litter that you can dispose of down the toilet
Some tips for your cat litter box:
- Scooping: Scoop the cat litter daily to keep it clean
- Amount of litter: Add additional litter if necessary but don't overdo it, some cats do not like it when it is too deep
- Odour control: Sprinkle baking soda at the bottom of the box. Avoid using harsh & toxic chemicals, bleach or artificial fragrances.
- Washing: Wash the litter box with hot water and soap
- Number of litter boxes: Multiple cat owners should try to have one litter box per cat
- Litter box type: Test whether you cat prefers covered or uncovered litter boxes
- Placement: Avoid placing the litter box near warm places (i.e.: washing machines) as it can increase odours
- Cat privacy: Placing the litter box in a way that it offers your cat some privacy
- Training: Trust your cat's instincts and avoid scolding your feline friend to avoid scaring him of the litter box
