I wouldn't recommend this for an exterior door. But we installed it on our bedroom door, and it's absolutely perfect for that. We bought the larger size. Our Gizmo, who's a Maine Coon—still just a kitten, but it will still be big enough when he's fully grown—learned to use it really quickly. The package comes with a template so you can make the right-sized opening. You just need to make sure it's straight when you measure.
