Vet Melina Klein explains What is a Vetbed?

Vet Melina Klein

"Vetbeds are special mats for pets that store body heat, dry quickly, are extremely comfortable, can be washed and, in some cases, can even be sterilised. They can also be cut to your desired shape and size. I very often recommend Vetbeds for dogs, cats and rabbits, but sometimes also for other species such as guinea pigs and for use in pet carriers.

Vetbeds always consist of a robust backing material, for example latex, and a soft pile. Like with a carpet, the pile is made of vertically attached fibres, which are perceived as softer and fluffier as the length increases.

Different Vetbeds are suitable depending on the individual symptoms: Depending on the type of materials used and their properties, the focus is on slip resistance, comfort, drainage of bodily fluids or the anti-allergenic or antibacterial effect. Some Vetbeds also combine several different properties.

Vetbeds have become indispensable, especially for animals that are prone to wetting themselves, as they quickly drain the urine downwards."

According to Melina Klein, which Vetbed is suitable for my pet?

"Although there are now many low-cost replicas, I recommend the original Vetbed to my patients due to its excellent quality.

Due to their urine-draining properties, Vetbeds are suitable not only for incontinent animals, but also for those who find it difficult to visit the toilet or who are not yet house trained. Patients with osteoarthritis benefit from an (additional) joint-friendly version with an extra-high pile. In addition, anti-slip properties should be considered for all types of musculoskeletal disorders and neurological problems ("SL" = "slipless").

In animal care facilities in particular, Vetbeds must be able to withstand cleaning and disinfection. In this case, I recommend a latex-free version, which can be washed at 95 degrees.

Vetbeds with a pile that has a Permafresh coating are suitable for dogs, cats and small mammals with skin conditions or environmental allergies: It forms a protective layer that protects against bacteria, mites and fungi, which can prevent secondary infection for pets with sensitive skin."
