Clumping Cat Litter

Clumping cat litter has rapidly become the most common litter used. This litter consists of granulated bentonite clay which clumps together when wet and forms a solid mass separate to the clean litter in the box. The clumps can then be scooped out without changing the entire contents of the litter box. The advantage of this litter is that is does not need to be replaced nearly as frequently as traditional, non-clumping cat litter. Caution: Kittens may require supervision when using a litter tray.

What types of clumping cat litter are there?

Clumping cat litter comes in a variety of materials, each with unique properties suited to different cats and household needs. Here is an overview of the most common types:

  • Bentonite: A natural clay that forms strong clumps for easy scooping. Highly absorbent and excellent for odour control.
  • Clay Cat Litter: Traditional clay-based litter that clumps effectively and is widely available. It is economical but often dustier than other types.
  • Corn Cat Litter: Plant-based and biodegradable litter that clumps naturally. It is lightweight, low in dust, and environmentally friendly.
  • Grass/Hay: Biodegradable litter with a softer texture. It may be less absorbent but is gentle on paws.
  • Silica Cat Litter: Crystal litter that clumps moisture quickly and controls odours well. It is long-lasting and virtually dust-free.
  • Soy: Plant-based litter that forms clumps naturally. Biodegradable and low-dust, often scented lightly for odour control.
  • Wood Pellet Litter: Derived from compressed wood pellets or shavings. Biodegradable, low-dust, and provides natural odour absorption.
  • Zeolite: Mineral-based litter with strong odour absorption. Lightweight and often combined with other clumping materials.

What features should I look for in clumping cat litter?

Choosing the right features in clumping cat litter can may make cleaning easier and suit your cat’s preferences. Consider the following options:

  • Dust-Free Clumping Litter: May reduce airborne particles, often chosen by owners for cats with sensitivities.
  • Scented Clumping Cat Litter: May help mask odours, popular with owners looking to make litter areas more pleasant. Use cautiously, as strong scents may deter some cats from using their litter tray.
  • Coloured Clumping Litter: Changes colour upon contact with urine, designed to make cleaning with cat litter scoops more efficient, and enables owners to identify when their litter may need changing fully.

What are the benefits of clumping cat litter over non-clumping cat litter?

With so many cat litter options available, from silica cat litter to biodegradable and flushable options, it can be challenging to choose the most suitable one for your cat. However, one of the main things to consider is whether you prefer clumping or non-clumping cat litter.

To help guide your decision, here’s a closer look at the typical advantages and considerations of clumping versus non-clumping litters, based on different cat and owner needs:

Type

Clumping

Pros

Easy to scoop and dispose of solid waste; may be better at containing odours between full litter changes; often more efficient over time.

Cons

Can be dustier, which some owners try to avoid for respiratory sensitivity; may track more outside the litter box.

May Suit

Cats that use the tray frequently; owners who prefer quick spot-cleaning and longer intervals between full changes.

Type

Non-Clumping

Pros

Often chosen for kittens or long-haired cats; usually lower in dust; typically less expensive initially.

Cons

Absorbs moisture without forming clumps, so needs more frequent full changes; some owners find odour control less effective if the litter isn’t changed regularly.

May Suit

Kittens, cats with longer fur, or cats that may benefit from a softer, lower-dust litter.

Is clumping litter better for cats?

Clumping litter is generally preferred by cat owners for ease of cleaning and odour control. It forms solid clumps when wet, making it simple to scoop out waste and maintain a clean tray. However, some cats may be sensitive to scented varieties, and kittens should not use clumping litter until they are older. If you are uncertain, consult your vet for personalised advice.

Is clumping cat litter safe for kittens?

Clumping litter should generally be avoided for kittens under four months old. If ingested, the clumping agent can expand in their digestive system and cause blockages. For young kittens, use non-clumping, paper-based, or biodegradable litters. Gradually introduce clumping litter as the kitten grows to help them adapt safely. Be sure to check out zooplus’ range of kitten litter products to find the right options for your little one.
