AI-generated summary based on reviews added by customers

Cat's Best Original cat litter has received mixed reviews. Many customers appreciate its excellent clumping ability and odour control, making it a favourite for years. However, recent changes in the formula have led to complaints about increased dustiness, poor clumping, and tracking issues. Despite these concerns, some users still find it economical and effective, highlighting its lightweight nature and pleasant woody scent. Overall, it's a product that has its ups and downs depending on individual preferences.

Top local reviews

Used to be fantastic - changed the formula now its terrible!

Used for 4 years and always been very happy but the new formula is useless doesn't clump well anymore at all. We/re going to have to swap to another brand - does anyone have any recommendations??

It has changed, won't be buying it again

I used this for several years until it changed around 2010 or thereabouts and there were complaints popping up on reviews. I also had a bad bag, however it reverted back to being good stuff although not as good as OKO Nature Gold which was out of stock recently so bought OKO - it is absolutely useless, may as well have used a bag of sawdust, it turns to mush in the tray and doesn't clump. I am hoping it is just a bad batch but not buying it again as it is terrible.

Used to be great but not any more

Seems like they've changed the product and now it doesn't clump any more. Now utterly useless. Will be changing to a different brand. Very disappointed.

Disappointed

I was really disappointed with this litter. I've 2 adult females who have both had kittens. I chose this as our bin men have been reluctant to take heavy bags and a,like the idea of bio-degradable. I had thought this would be superior to wood pellets but the mess this makes is awful. Constantly having to get Hoover out. I will be going back to wood pellets even though it doesn't clump as well as this one.

Used to be good, not now

This used to be good - it's not now. It doesn't clump properly and it smells.

It used to be the best litter, definitely not anymore

Our household consists of 6 cats, we have used the product for the last 6 years! We were buying 40l bag each month. Well, not anymore. It was really good quality back in a days, but the last 2 deliveries from Zooplus mark new chapter in our lives. The smell in the house is awful after the night, so the days where there was any odour control are long gone, our cats track the litter everywhere, it just sticks to their paws and fur. Instead of clumping - it turns into very fine dust.

Has changed and is not very good any more

I first bought Oko Plus several years ago and it was good, it clumped well and didn't track too much. Then there seemed to be a change in quality and refunds/replacements were being given for what was thought to be a bad batch. It was slightly better for a while bt never as good and I changed to something else. I was recently unable to order the Nature Gold pellets, always out of stock on Zooplus and as a last resort I bought Oko Plus.It doesn't clump and it tracks everywhere. Not buying it again

Gone from best to worst!

I recently reviewed this product as amazing! I breed bengals and so I need a high performance cat litter. I have used this product for about 8 years now but............. The material used now has completely changed, it doesn't clump together anymore and smells awful, the texture of it has changed and a lot darker. I'm extremely annoyed about it. After 8 plus years of my custom I will no longer be buying it!!! Sort it out cats best!!! Why change a perfect product?

Horrible odour

Really horibble odour!!!

Worst for tracking

Gets stuck in paws and ends up everywhere in the house Even put a tracking mat in front of the litter box to catch majority but no good. Switched back to wooden pellets

unhappy

Would never buy this product again. It was. Messy, mushy, and was tracked everywhere. It really wasn't good with odor control.

Light and mushy

Both, my cat and I dislike this litter very much. It is so light that it gets trapped in his paws and he carries it everywhere around the house. Also, when he does wee, the litter turns very mushy and he is reluctant to use the litter box because of this. Once I finish the 40kg bag I bought, I am getting back to Catsan, which suits us better.

This is THE WORST LITTER, EVER!

I am gobsmacked by all the glowing reviews of this horrible litter! It is awful! It has the consistency of polystyrene crossed with cardboard. So the pieces are huge and strangely lightweight, causing it to become readily airborne and oh-so-attracted to cat fur. For being so light and eager to cling to fur it is useless at the job clumping together for pee and doesn't cling to poo enough to help with the smell. This also caused the problem of my cat feeling like she hadn’t properly buried it so she circled round, digging incessantly, flinging this rubbish litter everywhere… outside of a COVERED litter box! I thought it would be better for a Persian cat because there would be less dust than clay-based litter but nothing is worth this mess. I wish I had seen a review like this and spared myself a big waste of time and money.

Beware of claims

I tried this as an alternative to Worlds Best which is also flushable and brilliant in terms of clumping and odour- but this was on an offer so thought would give it a try. Firstly, it doesn't really clump. The wee just makes a mush which is virtually impossible to scoop. Secondly, it trails everywhere. Got though the whole house. Thirdly. I only flushed a small amount and the toilet quickly blocked leaving a foul smell and water bubbling up through the sink. Would never use again. Gave a sack of it away. Gone back to worlds best which is completely flushanle in small amounts, clumps brilliant and leaves no odour. Even better it doesn't making my house smell like a pumping station. Don't waste your money.

Only good if you if you have a hoover at hand and an understanding family

We have 3 indoor cats. All are litter trained and are used to gravel and wood based litter. This is like tiny crumbs of litter. It gets stuck to their feet and gets distributed round the house. It went from the kitchen to the bed room on one morning. If the cats wee on it. It turns into a porridge like substance and then dries like a rock. Having to hoover daily and change trays every other day until it runs out :(

Horrible to say the least!

We were given this free and still - even with it being free it was not worth it. I have to vacuum twice a day and use a broom almost hourly to sweep the wood pieces. The "aroma" is making us gag. This might be useful to help those who wish to lose weight. I assume the 5 star ratings were company provided :)

Horrible choice

Never buy it again. Very messy, dusty and smell is everywhere

World's worst cat litter!!

I have no idea why this is rated so highly?? I've used lots of other litter in the past and this is the worst by far. It doesn't clump as well as other clumping litter but worst of all, the tracking is awful. Its sooo messy, all the floors in my flat are covered in litter from the tracking eventhough I use a special mat to capture the litter. It gets messy within hours of changing the litter and I just find myself cleaning the mess constantly. The litter also doesn't do a great job of masking the smells. Will go back to my previous litter I'm afraid.

Stunk up the whole house

We tried this out after reading the good reviews, eager to have a flushable cat litter. This litter STINKS! I was cleaning the litter tray twice a day, and you could still smell it all over the house. It didn't clump properly either, and made a huge mess when getting scooped, as well as when it got tracked all over the house. Cannot for the life of me understand the glowing reviews, this litter was a nightmare!!

I can't believe you all like it!

This litter is the worst I've ever used as it requires constant attention. I thought that I'd swap from clay clumping litter for my growing Maine Coon kittens to a wood based one, eventually moving to the big litter pellets as they get to 6-8 months old. It doesn't clump too well (bits drop off as you gently scoop up clumps) and it's so small and light it tracks all over the kitchen, I have to sweep the floor regularly. The only plus over clay is it smells nicer. I really wasn't impressed and would not buy again.

Cats Best Original litter

I've been using it for 12 years, it used to be the best litter, but now it's a disaster, just dust, it's no longer granules like it used to be. I'll never buy it again!

Terrible drop in quality

Used to be the best cat litter, I bought it for over a dozen years, but for the past few months the quality has clearly dropped, and since September 2026 it’s just a disaster—different colour, different smell, loads of sharp bits that get stuck in my cat’s paws, it’s dusty, and it doesn’t clump. I made a complaint about one pack and big thumbs up to Zooplus for sorting it out, but unfortunately the problem keeps happening with the next deliveries. The smaller packs (ordered to try) are just as bad, unfortunately.

Cats Best Original litter

It used to be my favourite, but now it's not worth the price. It doesn't clump well and falls apart when you try to move it to the toilet. Clearly, the manufacturer tried to cut costs, but being stingy ends up costing you twice…

All my animals developed respiratory symptoms from it – dangerous

There were probably fungus spores in this bag. I bought it a while back when I still had some of the other one left, so we only started using it recently. But once we did, about a week later, first my smaller cat started sneezing and had watery eyes, then the bigger one started coughing badly. I changed all the litter to tofu because I thought it was just the dust... but there was a bed where this stuff was stuck, and when my dog sniffed it and immediately started choking, that's when I realised this must be the cause. Only a few litres are missing from the whole bag... I'm furious.

The quality dropped a lot since September (at least for the 40-litre)

It seems this is a new batch and they've made changes to the product, which has ended up making it one of the worst I've ever used. Even its appearance has changed: it used to be light-coloured and yellowish, but now it's kind of grey. The price had already gone up quite a bit, but we kept buying it because it was the best for what we needed it for. Unfortunately, with these latest changes, they've completely ruined it.

Terrible, it used to be great but now it's really bad and even more expensive

I used to use it over 5 years ago but I won’t buy it anymore. I’ve given it several chances and it just keeps getting more expensive and the quality is really poor. IT DOESN’T CLUMP AT ALL. I’m switching to another brand. Farewell, CATS BEST.

Getting worse every time

It used to be really good, but it's getting worse every time—they don't clump at all anymore, and on top of that, it's getting more and more expensive. I've given it several chances but it just keeps getting worse, I won't be buying it again.

Extremely poor quality

I was always satisfied with Catsbest cat litter. The last two batches I ordered in September 2026 are the worst quality litter I’ve ever received. I contacted customer service because of this. It doesn’t clump, even after hours, and spreads all over the litter box. I changed it three days ago and will have to replace it completely again in the next few days because the urine clumps are spreading everywhere and it’s starting to smell. Something really needs to be done about this.

I won't buy it again

It used to be good years ago, but now it's ridiculously expensive and the quality has dropped so much that it smells bad, doesn't clump, and turns to dust by the second day. My cats don't want it anymore and I'm not surprised. The whole house smells awful and that's another customer they've lost.

‘Clumping’ litter

A bit like porridge oats mixed with Portland cement. The clumping is just a mess.

Cat's Best Litter

I bought this litter on the recommendation of friends who use it and praised its quality a lot. Unfortunately, for me and my cats, it turned out to be a nightmare. The litter was tracked not only all over the bathroom but throughout the entire flat, even though I had a special mat in front of the litter box. It looks like oat flakes and even behaves similarly when it gets wet. It doesn’t clump; yes, it forms a ball, but it’s muddy. It sticks to the bottom of the litter box and falls apart when the cat digs in it. I do not recommend it.

Quality has dropped a lot

I've been using this litter for four years and was always happy with it. It used to clump well, lasted ages, kept the smell under control, and didn't create any dust. But now it just has an unpleasant smell, even if you sift the tray every day and add fresh litter. When you fill it up, it gets dusty, and the clumps fall apart when you sift them. After only a short time, the tray is more dust than litter. Unfortunately, I really can't recommend it anymore.

Quality suddenly dropped

Our first packs were really impressive. These days, we steer clear of it. Unfortunately, it absolutely reeks, makes a huge mess, and it doesn't clump anymore either. There are much better alternatives out there!

Declining quality

I've been using this litter for over 10 years. The last two bags, though, the quality has really gone downhill. The litter is darker now and much less absorbent. The clumps fall apart and dirty the rest of the clean litter, which makes it smell bad really quickly. Not great for automatic litter boxes. Time to look for an alternative.

It's not the same anymore

I’ve seen that other people have had the same experience as me. I bought it for two years, it was really excellent. For months now, it’s not the same anymore. It DOESN’T CLUMP anymore. As for the smell, unfortunately I’ll have to try again because I bought a similar one, but the bad odour isn’t neutralised.

Dusty

The sand is very dusty, which is a shame because it goes a long way and clumps well.

Very dissatisfied, used to be better, doesn't clump properly.

The first ones we bought directly at Fressnapf were of higher quality.

Clumping litter???

I bought this litter because it was supposed to be very low in dust. But that's really the only advantage! As for CLUMPING litter...???? Every clump falls apart as soon as you lift it out of the tray, or even just shake it a bit on the scoop to let the clean litter fall back into the tray. So better not to shake it and just throw everything in the bin. What a waste! Even my three cats prefer to use the other tray, which still has the "old" type in it. Never again!!!!!
