Dog Names and Their Meaning

Dogs have become loyal companions and family members. This strong bond is also reflected in the effort dog owners put into finding the perfect dog name. The search for the right name for their furry friend can often become a test of patience for owners. Some prefer classic names while others want something very unique for their four-legged friend.

Our Tips for Finding a Name:

  • The dog name should match the dog’s character, & breed
  • Since dogs pay close attention to intonation, choose a name with high recognition value and that is easy to pronounce. Names with hard consonants at the beginning and vowels at the end are good for the dog to hear (for example, Sammy)
  • In general, one to two-syllable dog names are best, as they are easy to differentiate from commands and practical for calling the dog
  • The name should not resemble any commands, as the dog could easily confuse them (e.g., “Fritz” is similar to the command “sit”)
  • Avoid changing the name if possible, as dogs quickly get used to the intonation and a name change would require considerable time and effort
  • For pedigree dogs, there’s also the litter alphabet. This alphabet dictates the initial letter of the dog name, which naturally limits the selection
  • Take some time to choose the dog name to get to know the dog first and better understand its character
  • To get a young or new dog used to its name, associate the name with something positive. While petting and praising the dog, repeatedly mention the name

A small tip from zooplus! Treat your four-legged friend to a dog collar with its own name. This way, it will be addressed correctly straight away.
