Minerals and trace elements play a central role in many metabolic processes. Deficiency symptoms may arise in the absence of only one element: slow growth, show little colour, and become susceptible to illnesses. Vitality diminishes and life expectancy drops. Fish take in a major proportion of their vital minerals through their gills and their highly developed skin system.
Tap water lacks certain trace elements, which are removed in the course of conditioning drinking water. Along with hard water and pollutants, all trace elements are removed by reverse osmosis. In order to avoid deficiency symptoms, it is crucial to restore these trace elements to water prior to using it in an aquarium.
